Self–paced English Language Acquisition MOOCs are designed for any non-native English speaker looking to improve his or her English language skills, and the focus on specific topics. They offer participants the opportunity to take MOOCs at their own pace. However, there are suggested enrollment schedules to help participants structure their learning.

English for Media Literacy Self-Paced MOOC

About this course:

The English for Media Literacy MOOC is provided by the American English (AE) E-Teacher Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. government and administered by FHI 360. It is a self-paced MOOC, meaning that students will study independently, without facilitation from an instructor. This course is designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in improving their language skills and knowledge of the media at the same time. In this course, participants will investigate how media has changed over time. They will explore the world of advertising and identify targeted marketing strategies, analyze sources and detect bias, and examine how diversity representation in media influences individual identity and society. This course provides the opportunity to develop a broader understanding of the role media plays in our lives while building the vocabulary and language skills needed to analyze what we read and watch. Participants who complete all required activities with a score of 70% or higher will receive a digital badge and certificate.

Accessing the course:

This course will be offered between October 21, 2019, and July 27, 2020. Participants may log in and complete coursework at any time during this period. However, all coursework must be completed by July 27, 2020, in order to pass. Watch this space for more information about how to enroll starting October 21, 2019. Enrollment will be open from October 21, 2019, to July 17, 2020.

Pre-course orientation module:

An optional orientation module will precede the course modules. This short guide will help you get the most out of the online learning environment by providing an introduction to the AE E-Teacher program, MOOCs, using the Canvas Network learning management system, online learning success strategies, and how to find support during the course. We strongly encourage participants to complete this module before beginning the course.

English for Journalism Self-Paced MOOC

About this course:

The English for Journalism MOOC is provided by the American English (AE) E-Teacher Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. government and administered by FHI 360. It is a self-paced MOOC, meaning that students will study independently, without facilitation from an instructor. This course is designed for non-native English speakers interested in developing the skills needed for a career in modern journalism. In this course, you will explore print and digital media while expanding your vocabulary and increasing your ability to research and develop local and global news stories. Module One will provide an introduction to the history and principles of journalism. In Module Two, you will learn how to research, pitch, and interview. Module Three will focus on the language for writing newspaper and magazine articles. Module Four will cover the basics of broadcasting the news. Module Five will focus on the growth, impact, and challenges of the digital media age.
