The OPEN Program offers free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which are open to an unlimited number of participants. Some MOOCs are 5 weeks, and some are longer. Please carefully read the course description for each. Each MOOC is preceded by an optional orientation module. English for Journalism

English for Journalism is an OPEN MOOC for Learners. It is designed for non-native English speakers interested in developing the skills needed for a career in modern journalism. Participants will explore print and digital media while expanding vocabulary and increasing the ability to research and develop local and global news stories. This is a self-paced course. Self-paced MOOCs offer participants the opportunity to complete the course on their own schedule

English for Media Literacy

English for Media Literacy is an OPEN MOOC for Learners. It is designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in improving their ability to participate in the contemporary media landscape while building the vocabulary and language skills needed to analyze what we read and watch. Participants will explore recent changes in media and advertising, learn to analyze sources and detect bias, and examine how diversity representation in media influences individual identity and society. This is a self-paced course. Self-paced MOOCs offer participants the opportunity to complete the course on their own schedule.

Using Educational Technology in the English Language Classroom

This teacher-training MOOC will acquaint participants with technology tools and demonstrate how they can integrate these tools into their own English language teaching. This course was designed in collaboration with Iowa State University. This is a self-paced course. Self-paced MOOCs offer participants the opportunity to complete the course on their own schedule.

Integrating Critical Thinking Skills into the Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting

This teacher-training MOOC presents participants with a working definition of culture and tools for analyzing, understanding, and negotiating differences between cultures. With a view toward preparing teachers to implement culture and critical thinking lessons into their current teaching contexts, participants work through examples of related activities and lesson plan elements, as well as ways of evaluating students’ progress in these areas. This course was developed in collaboration with World Learning. This is a self-paced course. Self-paced MOOCs offer participants the opportunity to complete the course on their own schedule.

Professional Development for Teacher Trainers

This teacher-training MOOC,  designed for both new and experienced teachers, gives participants methods for creating, presenting, and evaluating effective teacher training workshops. This course was developed with Arizona State University. This is a facilitated MOOC, which will last 5 weeks.

TESOL Methodology

This teacher-training MOOC provides learners with strategies for teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing to English learners of different ages and contexts. They will discuss best practices for TESOL in the 21st century. This course was developed with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. This is a self-paced course. Self-paced MOOCs offer participants the opportunity to complete the course on their own schedule.
